These include a host of conditions including coronary artery diseases like Angina and Myocardial Infarction (heart attack), Stroke, Congestive Heart Disease, Hypertension (high blood pressure), Cardiomyopathy, Arrhythmia, Carditis, etc. The often overlap each other where developing one condition can easily lead to others if kept unchecked. CVDs, are the leading cause of death globally. Yet it is estimated that 90% of CVD related deaths are preventable. The underlying mechanisms of each disease varies and genetics can play a major role. Chronic high blood pressure, especially beginning at a young age is a major determinant. However, poor life style choices like smoking, lack of exercise, obesity excessive alcohol use and poor diet are the greatest contributing factors. While age is by far the most important risk factor it is also greatly dependent on the same previously mentioned live style Issues. Also, previous cardiovascular events, such as a heart attack or stroke, can be the strongest predictor of future cardiovascular events.

It is never too late. In addition to making the appropriate lifestyle changes, eating an appropriate diet and engaging in regular exercise, there is evidence that supports the effectiveness of nutritional supplementation in the prevention and support of CVD’s with or without the use of medications.
